Beauty is a tool, not the goal

A business website is there to encourage action: an enquiry, a call or a purchase. Design is one tool in that process, and it is not the most important one.

I regularly see visually impressive websites that do not sell. The reasons are almost always the same.

1. Visitors cannot tell what you offer

The first screen is your most valuable space. If people cannot understand within five seconds what you do, who it is for and why it benefits them, they leave. Abstract slogans like “We create the future” sound good but answer none of the customer's questions.

2. The website loads slowly

Every extra second of loading hurts conversion. Heavy animations, huge images and a dozen libraries can undermine sales faster than poor design. A beautiful page that takes eight seconds to load does not work.

3. The next step is unclear

An effective website answers “What next?” on every screen with a button, form or contact option. If the only call to action is hidden in the footer, even a stylish website will struggle to bring in leads.

4. The form asks too much

A form with ten required fields puts people off. For an initial conversation, a name and a way to get in touch are enough. You can ask about the rest later.

Clarity drives sales: a clear offer, a fast website and an obvious next step.

What to do about it

  • Make the first screen's offer clear: what you provide, who it is for and how it helps.
  • Check speed: aim for a load time under two to three seconds.
  • Add a call to action after each main content section.
  • Simplify the form to two or three fields.
  • Set up analytics and see where visitors leave.

The good news: most websites do not need a complete rebuild. A few targeted improvements can make a noticeable difference to conversion.
